State lawmakers took time to honor a school police officer and two helpers, in the aftermath of an attack at Oshkosh West High School.
The Assembly named Officer Mike Wissink, teacher Ken Levine, and student Duaa Ahmad “Hometown Heroes.” All three were at the Capitol Thursday.
Assembly Democratic Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh says the ceremony showed how three different people stepped up to help others in a challenging situation. He thinks that’s reflective of the local community and the rest of Wisconsin.
Prosecutors say Wissink was stabbed, before he shot 17-year-old student Grant Fuhrman last December.
Levine ran to help, after hearing gunshots, and put a tourniquet on Wissink.
Ahmad opened the doors to her mosque across the street, to let students inside.
