Oshkosh’s city council is going on record, opposing the deportation of any Hmong refugees, and Appleton may do the same.
Appleton’s proposal calls for sending a letter to the Trump administration.
Ald. Vered Meltzer says the city needs to take a stance, even if it doesn’t do anything. He says doing nothing would be doing anything. He believes they have to do everything they can, because of the harm it would impose on the community.
Appleton’s finance committee unanimously approved the proposal, and the full city council will vote on it next week.
There were reports last month that the Trump administration was negotiating with the Laotian government about deporting refugees with criminal records.
