APPLETON, Wis. — Appleton police are targeted by a so-called “mystery shopper scam.”
The department says it received a package containing items associated with the scam. It involves a fraudulent check and directions on items to purchase, with the intended victim promised a certain portion of the provided funds as payment. The victim is instructed to deposit the check and make the purchases, which are then transferred to the scammer. The victim later finds out the check bounced and that they are responsible for the spent funds and any corresponding bank fees.
Appleton police say their encounter serves as a good reminder to always stay vigilant and look out for others who may be vulnerable.
