President Biden has signed a bill that, at the moment, will ban TikTok in America.
After legislation passed both the Senate and The House of Representatives, Joe Biden signed his name on the dotted line, finalizing the deal, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the ban will happen.
TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew posted a video responding to the news saying TikTok will challenge the new law and is confident the social media app will prevail in the end, citing America’s First Amendment rights.
TikTok is owned by ByteDance, which is a Chinese company. There are fears that a company emboldened to China could be used as a spying device or even a propaganda machine to interfere with American views and/or politics. ByteDance has the option to divest from China and sell it to an American-owned business to continue to operate in ‘Merica, but that doesn’t seem like an option at this point.
